'Lovely’ Hermes driver who went ‘above and beyond’ loses her job after van is stolen
A South Yorkshire courier who lost her job when her van was stolen has thanked the people of the community where she worked for their kindess.
Self-employed Hermes delivery driver Sue Archer’s van was stolen when she was in Waverley in Rotherham on May 4, along with several parcels which were still in the vehicle.
A few days later, residents of the small South Yorkshire community found out Sue had lost her job with the giant delivery firm, although the firm say this was ‘not directly related’ to the alleged theft.
Waverley resident Matt Rimington, 28, said everyone in the village was upset when they heard the news, so clubbed together to do something about it.
On the fundraising page he set up, the appeal has since raised almost £2,000 for the valued van driver, while dozens of people have also left messages of support for her.
Dawn Cook said: “Such a lovely lady. She always stops for a chat as she knows I’ve been through some rough times lately. Hope everything comes right. A lovely lady who goes above and beyond as a courier.”
John Evans said: “We are only too pleased to be able to help in some small way. Sue is a very nice and hard working young lady who deserves all the help she can get. We hope things work out ok for you. Good luck.”
And Scott Fryer said: “Sue has been one of the people I've seen most during lockdown. I can’t believe how low some people will go these days. Hopefully this will soften the blow somewhat. Thanks Sue for the fantastic service especially over the past year or so.”
Sue has since thanked the community by leaving flowers on a bench in Waverley. A message on the bouquet read: "To all the kind people of Waverley. Thank you for your support.”

A spokesperson for Hermes said: "We can confirm that this self-employed courier no longer delivers on behalf of Hermes, however this decision is not directly related to the ‘alleged’ vehicle theft.
"Our Service Provider Complaints Panel enables couriers to challenge decisions made regarding their service and raise any complaints they may have."
