The volunteer run Steel City Trophy, which was only started last year, has been selected as one of Skating Union’s main events for 2020.

This has meant entries from teams across Europe, Russia and Australia, with 130 per cent more teams than last year.

Amanda Hembrow-Jones, head coach at the Sheffield Synchronized Skating Academy, said: “Each synchro skating team is made up of between nine and 16 skaters.

“Factor in coaches, team managers, chaperones, parents and supporters, and we fully expect to welcome in excess of 2,500 extra visitors to the region for the duration of the competition.

“Of the 76 teams competing, six are from our own academy here in Sheffield and the rest are travelling to the area and most will stay overnight for several nights.

“Outside the days they are skating, they will help the local economy through meals, entertainment and shopping – so it’s a real boost for tourism.

“In addition, we’re using local suppliers for merchandise, video filming and streaming, which helps the region even further.”

The academy is a not-for-profit organisation, and is looking for sponsors for the international Steel City Trophy to help support costs.
