The Ingle Runners – funded by the Brendan Ingle Foundation – tackled one of the steepest hill climbs in Sheffield recently to support the work of the not-for-profit organisation, which repurposes food destined for landfill.

48 socially-distanced runners took on the 5k Jenkin Jingle over the festive period – starting at Concord Sports Centre, and including Jenkin Road, which was part of the Tour de France Grand Depart route in 2014.

A spokesman for Food Works Sheffield said: “All of us at Food Works Sheffield would like to say a huge thank you to the Brendan Ingle Foundation, and all the individuals who took part in the recent 'Jenkin Jingle' Christmas charity run.

“The £335 raised, and donated, will enable us to save approximately 500kg of food from going to waste – enough to feed 35 people for one week.

“Support like this plays a massive part in helping us continue to provide affordable and nutritious surplus food to those in our community, and to also have a positive impact on the environment, at such a difficult time.”

Food Works is not means tested, and is therefore available to everyone.

During this pandemic year, Food Works has provided 27,000 surplus food boxes, cooked 20,000 nutritious meals, set up food hubs across Sheffield, saved one million meals from ending up in landfill, and have taken on 100 new volunteers, taking their active volunteer team to over 300.

For every £10 donated to Food Works, 15kg of food is saved from landfill and redistributed through various schemes to the people of Sheffield.

The Ingle Runners donation will save 450kg of food from landfill while feeding the people of Sheffield over the coming months.

As well as those taking part on the day, a number of other runners also took on the challenge remotely, signalling a strong finish to the year for the running group which launched two years ago in Wincobank.
