Instead of the usual crowd of people paying their respects with a two-minute silence at 11am, there was a break in the solemn tradition for the first time since 1919 as the country battles the spread of Covid-19 this year.
Civic leaders and representatives from the armed forces met at the Cenotaph on the steps of the City Hall to lay ten wreaths on behalf of the community.
The service, which was filmed by Sheffield Council and put on their Youtube channel, saw a two-minute silence, readings and The Last Post played.
Father Grant Naylor from St Matthew’s Church lead the service today, November 8.
Councillor Tony Downing, Lord Mayor of Sheffield, read the poem ‘A Soldier’s Cemetery’ by John William Streets at the service.
Speaking after the service he said: “It was a very poignant service with just a few people there.
"Because of Covid we didn’t want to encourage crowds of people, which is why we did it at 9am.
"It was very different. It is normally so well attended and I missed that today.
"I am glad we were allowed to do it, at one point we weren’t sure if we could.
“I have always been supportive of the armed forces, I haven’t served, but, I am a big supporter of the sacrifice they made for the freedom we have today.
"It is important we continue to remember all the people who gave so much.”
This Wednesday is also Armistice Day, which will mark 102 years since the signing of the Armistice to end World War One.
