John Berry, 37, puts on his own dazzling display each year, and this time he’s going one better.

With 14,000 lights and a fully recycled display, John said: “I do it to make people happy and put a smile on their faces.

“It’s for people who can’t afford to go to the big light switch ons, and the big Christmas events. I just want to spread the festive feeling to people around the area.

“I also volunteer and help the community do their Christmas lights, for the local Christmas markets and the village.”

This year, John’s display is raising money for Southern Light Church in Woodhouse. He said: “We’re specifically raising for the food bank, we just want to give a bit of hope to the community.”

The grotto is made from wood and materials from building sites, skips, and whatever people are throwing away.

“I’ve made my own 3ft by 2ft sleigh for kids to sit in and have their picture taken, I’ve made my own reindeer, and I’ve also made my own 6ft elf out of rescued wood.”

For those wanting to visit, the official switch on is at 6pm on December 3. Hallam FM are bringing Santa, his elves and his sleigh, and a big crowd is to be expected.

From December 4 onwards John’s display will be on from 4pm.
