Hundreds line South Yorkshire streets to see Prince Charles, as Royal donation to flood relief revealed

Hundreds gathered in the streets to welcome the Prince of Wales to South Yorkshire, as it was revealed he had put money into the flood relief appeal.

The Prince overran his schedule, staying longer talking to flood victims in Fishlake, Doncaster, than originally planned, as he heard individual stories of suffering from victims and devotion to duty by the emergency services who helped in the relief and rescue efforts during last month’s disaster.

He has made a donation to the South Yorkshire Community Fund appeal to help victims across South Yorkshire, and spoke to scores who had been affected.

Residents affected by flooding met the Prince at a reception in Fishlake Village Hall, after he had walked through the village, visiting the homes of some of the victims, as well as the church which became the centre of the recovery operation, and the Hare and Hounds pub, an improvised emergency centre for victims when the floods first struck.

Residents across South Yorkshire were flooded when around a month’s worth of rainfall fell in just 24 hours. Over 25 roads and four bridges were closed and around 1,000 residential properties flooded.

Arriving accompanied by police outriders, Prince Charles walked from Fishlake Nab towards a line of assembled emergency workers as firefighters, armed forces, police officers, council workers and Environment Agency staff told him about the events of November 8.

He then walked into the village accompanied by Doncaster Council official Pat Hagan, who has been on the frontline of the flood relief effort, stopping off to visit a resident.

Among those lining the route who he stopped to speak to was Bernard Maltby, whose home suffered minor flooding. The Prince told him he hoped his visit was not causing too much disruption to the village.

Mr Maltby said: “I think it is fantastic he has come here. We had Boris Johnson last month, now we’ve had the future king.”

Hare and Hounds landlord Scott Godfrey, said to him outside the pub: "We were just going to get you a pint when you got here. You might have needed one by this time."

The Prince replied "I do" and went inside for a quick sip of a half of bitter.
