Hospitality students at Sheffield College celebrate Salon Culinaire medal haul

Five food service students bagged three gold medals and a silver and bronze in one of the competitions held during this year’s International Salon Culinaire.

The Sheffield College team won the most gold medals overall in the food service category of the Salon Skills competition that involved a table laying skills test and wine pairing.

The students who competed, and who are completing a BTEC in Hospitality and Events Management at the College’s City Campus, on Granville Road, are Nicole Suliman, 18 - gold; Karina Hastings, 19 – gold; Eleanor Allison-Skinner, 19 – gold; Macy Elwis, 17 – silver; Jack Jubb, 18 – bronze.

The group are taught by Maxene Gray, Course Director, BTEC Level 3 Hospitality and Food Service, The Sheffield College, who said: “The Salon Skills competition gives those at the beginning of their career a chance to compete and practice some of the skills that are essential to their trade and that will help them go further in their career. I am really proud of their achievements.”

It’s even more impressive given the challenges of studying during the pandemic. Well done to our students and the staff who supported them!”

The annual event attracts scores of competitors from the industry as well as colleges and universities and aims to showcase the skills and talent within the sector.

The Salon Skills competition is for students, trainees and apprentices at the beginning of their careers and it took place remotely, on May 26, 2021, at competitor colleges due to coronavirus safety restrictions.

This latest success follows hot on the heels of the College securing a place in the Nestlé Toque d’Or Grand Finals, which takes place at the end of this month.
