Heroin addict choked to death in Sheffield takeaway

Paramedics battled to revive a heroin addict who choked to death in a Sheffield takeaway, an inquest heard.

Kasam Dadd, aged 64, started choking on food in the Kasmir Grill takeaway on Firth Park Road, Page Hall, on October 28, last year.

The ambulance service was called but paramedics were unable to revive him and Mr Dadd, originally from Pakistan, was pronounced dead at the scene.

An inquest into his death heard that Mr Dadd, of Horninglow Mount, Firth Park, also had enough heroin in his system at the time of his death to have killed him alone.

Assistant coroner Katie Dickinson said Mr Dadd was a ‘lifelong heroin user’ and read out reports from professionals, including his GP, painting a picture of long-term substance abuse.

In her report, Dr Trish Evans, of Page Hall Medical Centre, referred to Mr Dadd’s use of heroin, crack cocaine and cannabis and said he had also used methadone for nearly 15 years.

Ms Dickinson, who recorded a narrative verdict that Mr Dadd ‘choked on food’ and was a ‘lifelong heroin user’, said he had a ‘potentially fatal concentration of heroin’ in his body when he choked.

She said the level was high enough to have caused his death even if he had not choked.

In a report from PC John Charles, of South Yorkshire Police, it was revealed that large crowds had gathered in and around the shop while medics were trying to revive Mr Dadd.

Police officers were drafted in to disperse the onlookers.
