We asked our readers what they thought were some of the most Sheffield phrases around, and here are nine of the most popular ones. What do you think?
5. 'Hendo's'
Henderson’s Relish is a Sheffield delicacy, but you’re only a true Sheffielder if you know it as ‘Hendo’s’, right? On your chips, on your meat and potato (or meat and tatie) pie - you name it, we love it. Oh and no, it’s not Worcestershire Sauce, thank you very much. Photo: Simon Hulme
6. ‘Nah then’
The true greeting of any proper local, and must be done with a slight dip of the head and raise of the hand. ‘Oreyt’ and ‘Eyup’ are other popular Sheffield greetings, followed by a term of endearment like ‘lass’ or ‘love’. We don’t do a simple ‘hello’ round our ends! Photo: Prostock-studio - stock.adobe.com
7. 'Gi'orr'
A proper Yorkshire way to say ‘stop it’. If you’re from Sheffield you’ll definitely have heard this one. Sometimes it’s followed by ‘wi ya’sen’ - if you know you know! Photo: Krakenimages.com - stock.adobe.com
8. ‘Was tha born in a barn? Put wood in’t ‘ole’
It might be one you’ve heard your grandad say, but plenty of our readers suggested this one, which basically means ‘close the door’! Photo: Stas - stock.adobe.com
