thousands of children each year, has stepped in to fill some of the childcare gaps being experienced by key worker parents across the city.

Their Active Childcare Service, for 4-15 year olds, is a direct response to a joint survey sent out to key workers by Kings Active Foundation and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

Its aim was to better understand childcare needs of key workers responding to the Coronavirus outbreak across the city and confirmed the need for more provision and options for parents.

Even with schools' provision, the survey found that key workers parents are still looking for childcare in the coming weeks, particularly to cover the Easter holidays. Sheffield High School for Girls have responded to the need and made their facilities available at short notice.

Four-day spaces are available to book at Sheffield High School from Tuesday, April 14 to Friday, April 17, between 8.15am and 5.45pm, and will cost £80 for four days, equivalent to £2.10 per hour.

Children will enjoy a healthy mix of active games and activities, all chosen to limit physical contact whilst having fun. An outdoor pick up and drop off point will also be set up to limit the number of people entering the facilities and ensure a safe environment for all involved.

Richard Holmes, chief executive of Kings Active Foundation said: “It’s clear from our conversations with multiple agencies across the UK that childcare is a barrier for many key workers, particularly those working for the NHS and emergency services. We believe that, by working collaboratively, we can create additional childcare provision and support those working in critical roles.

“Our Active Childcare model is deeply rooted in our mission to get children active, having fun and learning together, whilst adhering to additional safety guidelines.

“This is just one of the key worker childcare projects we are working on, and we are open to speaking with more Trusts and more agencies.”
