Readers may already recognise Freda France, from Shiregreen, after she hit the headlines when she was chosen to open the newly-revamped Ecclesfield Morrisons back in July 2019.

The pensioner had visited the supermarket cafe for lunch every weekday since her husband Harry died 23 years ago, and credited the staff and customers with helping her cope with her grief.

The ‘brilliant’ lady turned 90 today (Wednesday, August 5) and received the ‘best birthday present ever’ during a socially-distanced gathering thanks to grandchildren Victoria, 32, and Harry, 20.

Victoria said: “Due to Covid, nan hasn’t had a hug since February. I made the cuddle curtain out of a shower curtain, a clothes rail and some farmer’s gloves."
