Former Doncaster Rovers goalkeeper Neville Southall had his thousands of Twitter followers in hysterics – after cracking a dig about coronavirus and poking fun at his own goalkeeping skills.

The former Everton and Wales goalkeeping legend has become a popular figure on social media with his forthright views on a number of topics after hanging up his gloves.

And Big Nev, who rounded off his career at Doncaster in the late 90s, had his fans in fits of laughter with his own take on the coronavirus panic currently gripping the globe.

Taking to Twitter, he told his 157,000 followers: “People keep going on about washing their hands to stop getting coronavirus.

“Just give them gloves – as a lot of people say I caught f*** all when I wore mine.”

And his followers were quick to praise the football legend, 61, often described as one of the best goalkeepers of his generation.

One wrote: “Very funny, but very far from the truth,” while another added: “Thanks for the humour!”

Another added: “You were the best in the world Nev,” while another wrote: “Awww you weren't that bad! Did you not see Rachubka when he played for Leeds?”

Another Twitter user posted: “Best i’ve ever seen mate, you caught most things,and if you didn’t catch it you tipped it over.”

He began his career at Winsford United before joining Bury before moving on to Everton for £150,000 in 1981 where he established himself as the club's first-choice goalkeeper.

He went on to make a club record 750 appearances in all competitions, winning a European Cup Winners' Cup medal in 1985, a First Division championship medal in 1984–85 and 1986–87, an FA Cup winners medal in 1984 and 1995, and an FA Charity Shield winners medal in 1984, 1985, and 1995.

Former teammate Ian Snodin invited him to join Doncaster Rovers on a short-term deal at the start of the 1998–99 season, but he only made nine appearances for Rovers during that season, their first season in non league after relegation from the Football League.
