But plans for the distinctive, large building’s future have still not been outlined.

There is still no news about what will happen to the building on Furnival Road, at Victoria Quays, which has 128 bedrooms, a spa with a gym and swimming pool and the Quays Restaurant.

The freeholder New City Hotels has yet to respond to questions about the property’s future, and concerns have been raised that the closure could affect canal-side businesses who rely on trade from hotel guests.

The area has undergone a £5.8 million scheme to connect it to the city centre and which is set for completion in March 2020 but it is feared Hilton’s departure will be a setback.

Businesses have expressed concern that an empty building could attract vandals and the site could become an eyesore.

The hotel was reported to employ 100 permanent staff members.

Hilton previously stated it was working with staff to ‘understand their best options’ and would help guests affected to find alternative arrangements where possible.

The Star revealed how the hotel’s operator, Park Victoria Quays Lessee Ltd, recorded a £2m loss for 2018.

Hilton said it has managed the property since 1999 on behalf of the leaseholder Park Victoria Quays Lessee Ltd, which had decided to surrender its lease.

The hotel once boasted 128 bedrooms, a spa with a fitness centre, a heated swimming pool, and the Quays Restaurant and meeting rooms. The building has been a hotel since 1997.
