The rubbish, which included hypodermic needles and hundreds of beer cans, had accumulated in the hedges and was exposed when the greenery was removed as part of the development of the university’s Science Park site in the city centre.

Passers by and residents were shocked to see the amount of rubbish that was left behind, and called on the university to have it cleaned up as quickly as possible.

"I am Sheffield born and bred and I am proud of this city but there are some things that are not done right. This is proof of a rubbish problem in the city.”

The rubbish has now been cleared away by the contractors working on the project.

A spokesperson for Sheffield Hallam University confirmed the work was completed this afternoon.
