Damon’s American Diner closed in November last year, and it emerged that the distinctive round building on Sevenairs Road, Beighton, had already been purchased by the pub chain.

Despite rumours that the new pub may open in April this year, bosses at Wetherspoon are remaining tight-lipped about the exact timings.

A spokesperson for Wetherspoon said that while the sale was confirmed, there was no planned date for the opening of the new pub.

He denied any rumours that the pub may open in April, saying that there were no definite plans that they could reveal at the moment and that it was up to the person who would be in charge of the property.

The name of the new pub is also unknown. Wetherspoon’s pubs are often named after famous local people or landmarks of the town in which they are situated.

The closure of Damon’s meant dozens of jobs were lost.

And Wetherspoon’s purchase of the building has divided opinion.

John Smith commented on Facebook: “Biggest mistake ever. We don’t want a spoons at Beighton.”

However, Michael Gee spoke in support of the change, writing: “£1.49 a pint, a meal for a fiver what’s not to like about it? We will certainly be using it.”

And local councillor Chris Rosling-Josephs told The Star that he was “absolutely furious” about the decision.
