She said: "Spending time with the police on the frontline was an incredibly interesting and informative experience.

“I saw at first hand the bravery, hard work and dedication of our police officers. Their work is crucial to keeping the public safe, whether this be dealing with complex crimes or helping local vulnerable people.

“I learnt a lot from discussing with the officers I met about the challenges they face in dealing with crime.”

Dame Rosie, who is MP for Doncaster Central, was just one of many MPs across the country who spent the day with their local police force to see first hand the things that they deal with on a daily basis.

The scheme, which is organised by the National Police Chief’s Council and debuted last year, invites MPs to spend a day during recess with officers. Last year 150 MPs took part.

She added: “At a time when so many of us, following the tragic death of PC Andrew Harper, are reminded of the dangers faced by police officers on a daily basis, it was an honour to meet with our hardworking, dedicated and brave Doncaster police officers.”

PC Andrew Harper was killed while on duty in Berkshire on August 15. The investigation in to his death is on-going.
