Sue McDermott, 67, a long-time well-known Hatfield resident, former Brown Owl, retired headteacher and voluntary non-executive director of a national bereavement charity, was awarded the OBE earlier this month at Buckingham Palace.

The honour recognises a lifetime of service to education and particularly for her outstanding impact in supporting children and young people grieving a significant and often devastating loss in their lives.

Sue has supported grieving children and young people for twenty five years in a range of roles including national director and now voluntary non-executive director and trustee of Rainbows Bereavement Support GB. This national charity operates in most Doncaster schools and over 1,300 schools throughout Great Britain.

Mrs McDermott, of Station Road, said: “Every grieving child and young person needs to be understood and supported appropriately.”

* Ernest Lindley of Wheatley was awarded the MBE for services to children and families. The 78-year-old has cared for almost 70 foster children.
