Made possible with the support of players of the People’s Postcode Lottery, the Canal & River Trust and the Angling Trust are holding special Let’s Fish! events every Wednesday during August on local canals.

Let’s Fish! is a popular series of events aimed at adults who no longer fish or have never tried, or children aged seven and over, giving them the chance to get outdoors and experience fishing.

Learn the basics of fishing from a professional angling coach and discover the huge variety of fish found in canals and rivers.

All tackle and bait, as well as a rod licence and fishing permit, are provided for free on the day meaning people can just turn up and have a go - although it is best to secure your place in advance at www.canalrivertrust.org.uk/lets-fish.

John Ellis, national fisheries and angling manager for the Canal & River Trust, said: “Thanks to the support of players of People’s Postcode Lottery our charity is hosting 150 Let’s Fish! events across the UK this year, giving 3,000 people the chance to try fishing for free.

“Our canals and rivers offer plenty of peaceful places to get away from it all. With research showing that being by the water makes people healthier and happier these free sessions are a great way to unwind, enjoy quality family time and make new memories.”

He added: “A famously solitary sport, fishing lends itself to ‘natural social distancing’ and we want families to feel reassured by the Covid-19 safety measures at these events. These include providing hand sanitiser, adapting our coaching style, reducing numbers on-site and introducing a track and trace system.”

A new video series aimed at those who want to put into practice what they have learned at Let’s Fish! is available at https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/fishing/fishing-skills/learn-to-fish-next-steps.

Sessions at The Roundabout, Tinsley Park Road, S9 5DQ are running from 10 am to 4.15pm on Wednesday August 12, 19 and 26.
