Nasar Raoof, the postmaster at Banner Cross, has been arranging fundraising events to benefit various causes with his family and his post office staff for nearly four years.

His most recent effort was a curry lunch which raised an impressive £600 for WORK, a local charity for learning disabled adults aged 16+. Students from WORK were there accompanied by some of the staff.

Both the post office and WORK are situated in the Ecclesall ward. The local Liberal Democrat councillors, Shaffaq Mohammed and Barbara Masters, fully support these enterprises, recognising the positive benefits they bring to the wider community. The post office provides vital services to residents and businesses in the Banner Cross area and beyond. WORK supports over 83 students with learning disability from across Sheffield each week.

WORK operates a popular café, The Hidden Gem at Bents Green, which provides its students with the opportunities to develop and practise vital life skills. It also provides other significant training at the site which many people are unaware of.

Nasar’s fundraising raised £600 which he presented to Diane Wilson, the Centre Manager at WORK. Nasar and Cllrs Mohammed and Masters were invited to observe students engaging in various activities and creating high-quality items for sale, further highlighting the importance of WORK's mission.

The café's revenue plays a crucial role in supporting WORK’s operations; however, the growing demand for their services underscores the constant need for funding. Nasar’s fundraising efforts not only helped provide financial support but also raised awareness about the importance of the charity.

Nasar says ‘We can never quite do enough for the work the heroes at Work Ltd do but the small funds raised of £600 will go towards vital resources.’ He is already planning another fundraising event for November, continuing his commitment to supporting WORK and its contributions to the community. He adds ‘I want to thank the community and councillors working in partnership with the Post Office to develop much needed money to such a worthy cause. We look forward at your local post office banner cross to raising more funds on the 25th November 2024.’

Local councillor Barbara Masters commented, “Nasar’s commitment to our community is inspiring. His fundraising efforts not only provided crucial support for WORK but also raised awareness about the fantastic work they do. It was heartening to see residents and local businesses come out to support such a worthy cause. The local community's engagement illustrated the collaborative spirit of the Banner Cross area.”
