Colonel Tom, who received the honorary title today on the day an RAF fly-past was held as he turned 100, initially aimed to raise £1,000 by walking 100 lengths of his garden.

But his appeal attracted national attention and as of 8.30pm tonight a staggering £32,393,296 had been raised.

The war veteran’s donations page closes at midnight.
