Burngreave councillor celebrates arrival of litter enforcement teams in Sheffield

“This is an important step towards keeping our streets and public spaces clean”

A councillor in a Sheffield ward that has long been blighted by littering has celebrated the arrival of new council enforcement officers.

Burngreave councillor Mustafa Ahmed described the new officers as an “important step” forward after previously complaining that his ward had to fight for clean-up operations.

The new operatives were out in the area last Wednesday (August 26), with Coun Ahmed saying that they handed out more than 10 fixed penalty notices to people caught littering around Ellesmere Green.

“This is an important step towards keeping our streets and public spaces clean,” the Green Party councillor added.

“Residents should be aware that enforcement officers will continue to patrol the area, and anyone caught dropping litter could face a fine.

“I welcome this increased enforcement and will continue working to make sure Burngreave is cleaner, safer and better for everyone.”

Sheffield City Council announced last month that they had joined forces with the City of Doncaster Council and specialist enforcement provider Waste Investigations Support and Enforcement Ltd (WISE) to run what they described a ‘dedicated proactive enforcement service’ across the city.

The enforcement officers are able to issue on-the-spot fines for dog fouling and those caught dropping rubbish.

Richard Eyre, director of street scene and regulation, at Sheffield Council, said: “Residents rightly expect clean streets, parks and neighbourhoods, and most people take pride in their local area. Unfortunately, a small minority continue to spoil our city by dropping litter or failing to clean up after their dogs.

“This new partnership means people will see more enforcement officers out in communities across Sheffield. Their role is to tackle these offences, issue fines where appropriate and help make it clear that littering and dog fouling will not be tolerated.

“By increasing our enforcement activity, we can better protect the places people live, work and visit, while creating a cleaner and more welcoming environment for everyone.”
