Big Brother Burngreave: Sheffield group aims to carry on inspiring social change

Big Brother Burngreave stops children and teenagers from being caught up in gang crime by offering activity sessions as an effective diversion. Last year it won the ‘Move More Power of Sports’ award for its good work – but the initiative needs funds to continue.

On Saturday a football tournament and barbecue was held at Concord Sports Centre in Shiregreen, where group leader Sahal Bare explained more.

“If Big Brother runs out of funds we will have nowhere to go," said the 19-year-old.

“It is a place they can have fun, a place where they can feel safe, a place where they can connect with people and talk to each other. A lot of people still don’t know about us.”

Members planned the day themselves. Tensaye Soloman - a boxer and a group leader in training - was also present, and spoke of how Big Brother helped him through a dark time growing up.

“It’s a family - a home away from home,” he said.
