And when he called into the St Luke’s Hospice Broomhill vintage shop he knew he had found exactly what he was looking for.

Now, as part of National Volunteer’s Week - which runs from June 1 to 7 - James is encouraging other people to follow his lead and become a St Luke’s volunteer.

Gardener James already had an interest in vintage items so he applied to become a St Luke’s volunteer and is now a regular member of the St Luke’s retail team.

“I moved to Sheffield and I wanted to get to know the community and people within the vicinity where I was living,” James explains.

Now he volunteers at the Broomhill shops anything from a couple of afternoons to three shifts per week.

“I do all sorts of things, from working on the till to putting out and pricing stock and I also do most of our window displays and visual marketing,” he says.

“If you have spare time on your hands or an interest in retail or want to be part of the community and giving back it’s a good thing to do really.”
