Amazing photos from teen pilot's plane show Sheffield from the sky

Will Travis earned his pilot’s licence on his 17th birthday last August, having passed his final skills test aged just 16, and has set his sights on flying commercial planes.

His proud father Jim has joined him in the cockpit on several occasions and took the chance to snap these fantastic bird’s-eye shots of their home city.

Sheffield Wednesday’s home at Hillsborough and Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium are both captured from above, along with other landmarks including Meadowhall, the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Owlerton Stadium and many more.

Jim, who runs a travel agency, also used the opportunity to get some fantastic shots of his family home in Frechville and his parents’ place in Grenoside while they were passing about 3,000 feet overhead, before the coronavirus lockdown began.

“Will started flying gliders when he was around 11, before moving on to piloting planes. He’s studying for his commercial pilot’s licence at the moment, and we’re so proud of him,” said the 52-year-old.

“I’m born and bred in Sheffield so it’s nice to be able to fly over my home city and see it from a different angle.”

Will, who usually flies from Retford Gamston Airport and has piloted a plane as far as Guernsey, is a student at All Saints Catholic High School and was due to sit his A levels this summer before schools were closed due to COVID-19.
