From hidden museums and architectural marvels to a vast underground world, we’ve put together a list of Sheffield’s less vaunted attractions for visitors to check out. Some of them might even be unexplored by locals.
We’d love to hear your suggestions of other unusual and little-known places and things to do in Sheffield which you feel are also among the city’s hidden gems.
13. Graves Gallery
It houses work by artists ranging from Paul Cézanne and JMW Turner to Grayson Perry, Bridget Riley and Damien Hirst, yet Sheffield's Graves Gallery still feels like a bit of a hidden gem, given its location on the fifth floor of the Sheffield Central Library building. Entry is free, though donations are welcomed. Photo: Simon Hulme
14. The Megatron
The Megatron is a huge Victorian tunnel running beneath Sheffield city centre. The marvel of engineering is part of a series of Victorian culverts created to carry water from the rivers Sheaf and Porter Brook. Not many people have seen inside but the Sheaf and Porter Rivers Trust runs guided tours giving you the chance to learn more about the history of the city and its development via this subterranean world. You'll have to be quick as they often sell out soon after being advertised. Photo: Steve Ellis
