Pensioner in Rotherham crash

POLICE closed a road in Rotherham after a car collided with a vehicle in standing traffic then crashed into a wall outside a house.

The motorist in the Rover 75 is believed to have fallen ill at the wheel before the crash.

Police said the 76-year-old, who was from Doncaster, had come out of an access road behind Welldrakes Chemist in High Street, Maltby, Rotherham.

He then crashed into a Rover ZR which was stationary at traffic lights.

The pensioner’s car then continued across the road and smashed into the wall.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said the pensioner was taken to Rotherham District General Hospital after the incident.

The collision happened on Monday and police said yesterday that the driver was described as being in a ‘stable’ condition.
