Pensioner dies crossing street

A pensioner died after he was struck by a car as he crossed a Sheffield street.

Police said the 86-year-old, who has not yet been named, was crossing Gleadless Road, Gleadless Valley, when he was struck by a red Ford Fiesta close to the junction with Buck Wood View.

The driver of the car, a 37-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Witnesses to the collision at 5.15pm on Sunday should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111, quoting incident number 788 of December 22.
