In this beautiful one-off, Penelope Keith a proud villager herself for 40 years, looks back at the hidden villages she has visited across Britain and puts together a selection of her favourites.

Actress Penelope will travel through some of the most spectacular landscapes of Britain, reflecting on its rural life through the stories and experiences of the communities she meets.

Her aim is to discover whether Britain’s much-cherished villages are thriving or struggling.

Penelope has lived in a rural village in Surrey for 36 years and has a keen sense of what makes villages special. She’ll be using guidebooks dating from the 1930s complete with evocative period illustrations and hopes she’ll discover a nation that is still full of stability, hope, and tradition. From the popular holiday hotspots of Devon and Cornwall, via the stunning shores of the Lake District and the wilds of Scotland, Penelope, visits some of Britain’s most captivating villages, exploring their extraordinary traditions, fascinating residents and marvelling at the captivating stories that can unexpectedly touch us all.

The show will give viewers a chance to take stock of what rural communities mean to our nation at a time when social and economic pressures threaten to erode this very British idyll.
