A FORMER Education Secretary who helped promote the establishment of new university technical college was today due to visit the site of Sheffield’s college.

Lord Kenneth Baker arranged to visit the site on Sidney Street to see construction in progress.

The college, one of the first to be developed in the UK, will offer places to pupils aged from 14, providing specialist education before university.

Lord Baker, who helped set up the Baker Dearing Educational Trust, which is promoting the growth of the colleges, said: “I am delighted to be visiting Sheffield to see progress.

“It is great to see the city really getting behind this initiative and leading the way providing first class training.”

Sheffield’s UTC, which opens in September, will be the only one in Yorkshire and the Humber and will focus on preparing youngsters for careers in advanced manufacturing and engineering.
