Peace garden plan bids for lottery aid

A PROJECT to transform two derelict chapels in Wombwell Cemetery into a peace garden has moved one step closer to reality.

The Peace from Dereliction project, run by the Friends of Wombwell Cemetary group, has reached the final stages of The Jubilee People’s Millions competition and could receive up to £60,000.

If the cemetery gets the £41,472 funding it needs, two Grade II listed chapels would be converted into an area for quiet contemplation. The walls and tower would be secured, the floor relaid and decorative trees and shrubs planted. A planned new wall to display personal memorials has already attracted considerable interest.

The Friends will be apprearing on the ITV Calendar news programme at 6pm on Tuesday and this will be followed by a telephone voting competition.

The Jubilee People’s Millions Big Lottery Fund initiative will grant 60 awards of up to £60,000 to new projects which will take place during 2012.
