Pair's race for Lucie

Lucie Campbell was only three years old when she contracted the life-threatening blood poisoning after falling ill last October.

She was taken to hospital in her hometown of Barnsley, where her condition quickly deteriorated and she began having seizures. She was then rushed to Sheffield Children’s Hospital where specialist doctors made the life-saving diagnosis of sepsis.

Dad Danny, a learning mentor in Barnsley, said: “It’s all a bit of a blur now. No one could tell us if she was going to be alright, if she was going to live – because they didn’t know. I felt helpless and paralysed with fear. In the space of a few hours she had gone from seemingly having a sickness bug to being in intensive care, fighting for her life. Doctors made the decision to put Lucie on life-support, with antibiotics to fight whatever was causing it.”

Danny, along with Lucie’s mum Carrie, kept a vigil at her bedside for three weeks while Lucy, who had been left so weak she couldn’t support her own head, finished her course of antibiotics and neurologists ruled out any lasting brain damage.

Danny said: “Lucie was discharged in December and has gone from strength to strength. You wouldn’t know she was ever ill.”

Danny is now in training with brother Joe for their first ever charity race, the Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon on April 10, where they hope to raise as much money as possible for The Children’s Hospital Charity.

Joe said: “The care Lucie received was second-to-none. The staff did everything they could for Lucie, and for Danny and Carrie to keep them constantly updated, so we want to give something back and help in any way we can.”
