That was one of the main reasons that UK National Golf Month, which will again run throughout May, was introduced a couple of years ago.
“Like everyone else, we had noticed a steady decline in playing numbers and that we needed to act to encourage new golfers,” said Owston Park Golf Club spokesman William Thimbleby.
“With our course being a nine-hole pay and play course we had already tried to encourage new golfers but felt we could do more. So we introduced our offer of free rental/hire clubs for National Golf Month in May 2014 and the results were encouraging.
“Not everyone can afford to buy clubs just to try golf so this gave them the option to try it without the outlay for clubs.

“The policy also catered for golfers who had given up a few years ago and got rid of their sets but now wanted another try at it.
“We decided to push National Golf Month again the following year, especially on social media, with the free use of clubs offer but this time carry on throughout the summer.
“Initially we had 122 new or lapsed golfers try golf in NGM. This ended up being just over 700 by the end of August, proving that running throughout the summer was the way to go. We now offer the free use of clubs all year round.”
