Owls match report: Sheffield Wednesday 1 Barnsley 1

Carlos Carvalhal's men looked on course to secure a much-needed win when Adam Reach gave them a 34th minute lead.

The Owls dominated the first half for long periods and should have been out of sight after creating a number of chances.

But Wednesday failed to grab a killer second and battling Barnsley made them pay, with Harvey Barnes spectacular 67th minute strike ensuring it finished all square.

Boos rang around Hillsborough at full-time and the result means the Owls have gone three matches without a win.

Carvalhal made two changes to his back four. With Glenn Loovens serving a one-match ban following his red card against Derby County, Joost van Aken was returned at centre-half.

Daniel Pudil was given the nod at left-back, coming in for Morgan Fox. Sam Hutchinson missed out again because of a knee injury.

Owls had the better of things in the early stages and Tom Lees headed Wallace's cross narrowly wide after a quick short corner.

But Barnsley responded well and Tom Bradshaw raced past van Aken only for Lees to make a superb covering tackle to deny the Welsh international a sight at goal. The visitors kept the move alive but Keiren Westwood was equal to Cameron McGeehan's weak drive from long range.

He rose highest at the back post to meet Adam Reach's delightful cross but Adam Davies turned away his header. Moments later, Reds captain Angus MacDonald then desperately cleared away Wallace's inviting delivery as the Owls continued to dominate.

Barnsley, looking for their first win at Hillsborough since 2009, forced Westwood into action in the 26th minute. McGeehan saw his low free kick brilliantly kept out by the Republic of Ireland interrnational.

Kieran Lee was desperately unlucky not to break the deadlock before the half hour mark. The midfielder's dipping right foot effort from 30 yards struck the post and Steven Fletcher was unable to turn in the rebound.

At the other end, Adam Hammill, sent off in this fixture last year after a clash with Hutchinson, fired straight at Westwood after a sloppy clearance by van Aken.

There was more than a hint of fortune in the Owls' opener. As Reach shaped to shoot, his attempt with his left foot from outside of the box deflected in off his right and looped over Davies. It was Reach's first goal of the campaign.

Hammill became the first players to be yellow carded by Premier League official Anthony Taylor after a late challenge on Fletcher.

On the stroke of half-time, former Owls youngster Davies pulled off more heroics, making a smart block to foil Lees after Barry Bannan drove to the byline and clipped in a peach of a cross.

The Reds created the first meaningful opportunity of the second period. Lees, a tower of strength at the back for Wednesday, headed McGeehand's goalbound curler over the top after great play out wide by Jason McCarthy.

Hunt provided good width throughout for the Owls and his centre picked out Fletcher but McCarthy blocked his strike.

It then took some top defending near his own goal line by Andy Yiadom to prevent Fletcher from converting Bannan's deft chip as Wednesday pressed forward in numbers for a killer second goal.

Against the run of play, Barnsley almost equalised in the 61st minute when Harvey Barnes struck the underside of the crossbar from an acute angle after a stunning solo run.

Carvalhal threw on ex-Reds trainee Jacob Butterfield after Pudil suffered a knock. It meant Reach reverted to full-back and Bannan moved to the left.

Barnes bagged the leveller midway through the half, cutting inside on to his right foot and curling a 30 yard shot past Westwood into the top corner. The winger, on loan from Leicester City, ran the full length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the Barnsley faithful.

Top-scorer Gary Hooper wasted a glorious chance to put the Owls ahead again in the 75th minute. He steered his header straight at Davies after good work by Wallace and Hunt.

The Reds continued to look threatening on the counter attack as Bradshaw narrowly blazed over on the turn.

Substitute Lucas Joao tested the reflexes of Davies in the dying minutes but Barnsley held on to heap more pressure on Carvalhal.
