Owls fans column: Carlos still has some questions left to answer at Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday headed into the international break with a strange air of division.

I have fans from other clubs sending me messages like ‘but you’re still in sixth place right?’

Some of these fans would give their right arm to be where we are, yet there is something that just doesn’t feel right about the current atmosphere around Hillsborough – and the central figure seems to Carlos Carvalhal.

I’ll admit I’m torn about Carlos as a head coach.

I have great sympathy with him about the amount of injuries we have sustained this season. Losing as many key players as we have for lengthy periods of time has meant we haven’t had the spine of our team available for most of the season.

Any manager would struggle with consistency when their best players are out of contention.

The encouraging news this week is that Hutchinson, Forestieri, Wallace and Hooper could all be back for the upcoming South Yorkshire derbies and Kieran Lee might make a comeback next month. We would dearly love to see what Carlos can do with a fully fit side.

I do however have less sympathy for Carvalhal with regards to the strength of our squad, when we have proven that we are reliant on players bought by Stuart Gray.

It’s difficult to justify the money that Carlos has spent and the sheer amount of players we have in our squad, to still feel like we have the depth of a shallow puddle.

This is apparent in central defence. Loovens and Lees played against Reading when they are clearly still unfit.

We Wednesday fans are like Goldilocks. Last season our style of play was too open and not defensive enough. This season it is too negative and not creative enough.

Maybe next season, if Carlos is given a chance and we have a fully fit squad, it’ll be just right?
