Owls boss boasts impressive win ratio

The charismatic Portuguese chief has got a point. There is still plenty of work to be done if the Owls are to realise their ambition of securing a play-off spot.

Regardless of what happens in the final two months of the campaign, it has been a good year, consisting of spectacular goals and entertaining attacking football. A top-six finish would just cap everything off.

Eyebrows were raised when chairman Dejphon Chansiri named Carvalhal as Stuart Gray’s successor last summer, but his bold decision has proven to be a masterstroke.

So much so that Carvalhal currently boasts the second highest win ratio of any Wednesday boss in the club’s history.

The 50-year-old has taken charge of 46 matches, overseeing 22 victories in all competitions, giving him a win ratio of 47.8 per cent. Only Harry Catterick (55.80 per cent) can better that impressive record.

Carvalhal has tasted defeat on just eight occasions in the Championship. Promotion rivals Middlesbrough are the only team to have completed the double over the Owls.

Carvalhal has also led Wednesday to the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup, dumping Premier League sides Newcastle United and Arsenal out of the tournament.

Defensively Carvalhal has built on the superb foundations laid by Gray last year. Wednesday set a new club-record at Huddersfield on Saturday, chalking up a fourth successive clean sheet away from Hillsborough.
