Author and university lecturer Simon Crump, aged 56, has arrived at court with fellow tree protester Calvin Payne, over a protest they staged on November 2 in a bid to protect a 100-year-old plane tree from being felled on Marden Road, Nether Edge.

They have both been charged under the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992, which criminalises those who stop people from carrying out lawful work.

The men object to plans to fell 36,000 trees in Sheffield as part of a city-wide road improvement scheme.

Fellow campaigners against the tree felling have gathered outside court in support of the two men.
