An 'outstanding' success

PUPILS, teachers and governors at Holy Rood Catholic Primary in Barnsley are celebrating after government education inspectors found two 'outstanding' strengths, and every other aspect of the school to be 'good'.

Ofsted inspectors said the school's partnership work with others to promote pupils' wellbeing, and their spiritual, moral and cultural development, were both grade 1, or 'outstanding'. The inspector's report says pupils make good progress because teaching and the curriculum are good. They enter nursery with skills slightly lower than would normally be expected for children of their age but leave school at age 11 with standards above the national average.

Describing the school in Shaw Street as a happy place, where pupils show tolerance and respect for each other and adults, the inspectors say the quality of teaching and learning is good.

"Teachers plan their work well. Challenging and interesting tasks engage pupils' attention well. This leads directly to good learning. Pupils make good progress because they are encouraged to work independently from an early age, and are trusted to work without close supervision," a report said.

The inspectors say pupils enjoyed their lessons and had good relationships with each other and teachers, and had the confidence to express themselves and enjoyed opportunities to celebrate their achievement and ideas.

They also commented on the active school council which raises money for a range of charities. Commenting on leadership and management at the school, rated as 'good', the inspectors found "a strong team spirit lies at the centre of all that the school does. Staff have a clear commitment to continued improvement".

Headteacher John Gregson, praised for his quiet determination, focus on raising standards, and encouragement to pupils, said he owed a real debt to the management staff, the children, governors and parish.

Mr Gregson said. "It is our duty and privilege to bring out the very best in each individual, who is made and loved by God. Children only have one chance in education and only the very best is good enough for the children of Barnsley."
