Nottinghamshire Police have issued a warning to local people after the rhea was reported missing from Carlton-in-Lindrick, near Worksop this afternoon, Tuesday 23rd June.

Officers were called just after 5pm this evening to a report that the 6ft-tall flightless bird, which is native to South America, was missing from a private collection.

The bird is understood to have gone missing between 5pm on Monday and 12pm today.

Insp Paul Peatfield from Nottinghamshire Police said: “We are warning local people and particularly those with small children to be on their guard and not to approach the bird, which poses a very real threat to the public due to its size, aggressive nature and the unfamiliar surroundings it could find itself in.

“Officers are working with the owner to trace the bird as we look to bring his incident to a safe conclusion.

“If anyone sees this bird, please call 999 immediately, quoting incident number 601 of Tuesday, 23rd June.”

There have been no reported sightings of the bird before 8pm this evening.

The bird is similar in colour to the one pictured here, but the escaped bird is fully grown.
