Downing Street said that a formal review was under way after the Government faced calls for clarity on the subject.

We asked Sheffield Star readers if they believed face coverings should be made compulsory in shops - and this is what some of them said.

Christine Ann Belcher said: “Unless you have a health problem masks should be worn in places like shops, on the bus and in hospitals to save from any further higher risk of the COVID coming back with a vengeance.”

Sheila Conroy simply said: “I think face masks should be worn at all times outside the home.”

Jimmy Sherwin said: “Yes [they should be compulsory]. They don't protect the wearer but they protect the other person. If we all wear them, we all protect each other.”

One reader Rachel Watts was, however, was unsure.

She said: “Absolutely not, I have seen so many people misusing masks and gloves. If you aren't trained to use them and if you don't properly understand cross contamination they create more problems, because people think they are reducing risk when they aren't.

"I've only been out a handful of times during lockdown and I've seen drivers with them on adjusting them then touching things in their car and back to the mask, I've seen a woman at a bus stop lifting hers off and on to vape and my husband's seen lots of people when he's been out shopping adjusting them or moving them to scratch their noses! If people could use them properly I'd say maybe, but they just can't.”

Other readers think it’s unnecessary for masks to be made compulsory.

Jane Mosley said: “No, I don’t think you should. if people want to wear them that's their choice. At the start of this we were told there was no need so what's changed? If your ill you should stay home.”

Beverley Hardware echoed the same thoughts when she said: “At the beginning of all this virus doctors stated that they were no good to wear, now suddenly they are a miracle?”

Lynne Campbell said “No, waste of time and we've come this far. People just have to be respectful and keep washing their hands.”
