We have lost more than we  truly appreciated we had...- Editor's comment

I can hear the rain lashing down on my roof as I write. It makes me appreciate the warmth and dryness of my home as thousands of people in our county dreading the impact of Storm Christoph.

It is a force of nature that is out of our control and all we can do is prepare as best we can.

We are a city built on seven hills and while that is one of the many wonderful things about Sheffield, it obviously also comes with negatives.

The beautiful streams of water that flow into the Peace Gardens represent the rivers that make their way through our valleys and even the industry for which we are so famous was only possible because of their power. Yet, sometimes, that same power brings devastation.

Stay home and stay safe – for more reasons than yesterday: Editor's comment

Christoph has made me worry for those who won’t sleep properly until he has gone. It has also reminded me of all the natural wonders which make our lives happier.

I miss standing on the peaks which stand so tall and wrap around our homes. I love those views. They are always breathtakingly spectacular even if you see them on a daily basis. I never get used to the best ones. It is impossible to walk through Norfolk Park and not marvel at what is laid out before you. I still get a buzz from the feeling I can’t escape at the top of Wincobank hill.

I have learnt a lot during lockdown and know now that I will never take such simple delights for granted again.

Just stepping outside the house to stretch your legs and fill your air with lungs is a treat after long days of working from home while also feebly trying to take the place of teachers. I want to get back to exploring my own city, to finding those nooks and crannies that I haven’t come across before, to chat to Sheffielders overs a cup of coffee in a cafe or even sat next to them on a bus. I miss all those every day things which we have lost without ever previously having truly appreciated that we had them. That nod across the street and ‘alreight lass’ which you just don’t get in your own living room. I just can’t wait to mingle again safely.

So as we batten down and brace for bad weather, as we battle to get to vaccine appointments come what may and as we yearn for the simplest of pleasures, we do it all together and we know that these strange times won’t last forever.

In these confusing and worrying times, local journalism is more vital than ever. Thanks to everyone who helps us ask the questions that matter by taking out a digital subscription or buying a paper. We stand together. Nancy Fielder, editor.
