She said: “Of course it is worrying and difficult decisions have to be made. We know the economy needs to be allowed to recover so we have to look for opportunities elsewhere to stop the increase. Schools again (probably more the secondary level) have to look at how education can be made safer. Remotely or online or maybe using some other venues for different year groups. We have plenty of venues available, learning centres, sure start centres, office blocks that are currently stood empty. The more space we can put between people and secure the allowed bubbles the better this would be. These are all activities that could take place across the whole country not just locally once the increases occur.”

Patricia Oliver said: “It was inevitable, it was always going to happen. If people would take it more seriously instead of as a joke maybe we would get somewhere. The virus is going nowhere for the foreseeable future.”

Andrew Thompson said he didn’t think the timing was a coincidence.

He said: “It’s not surprising is it, seeing as we have just received 60,000 students from all over coming back to our city.”

Jamie Osborne said he thought part of the problem was people not wearing PPE correctly.

He said: “It doesn't surprise me.. Too many idiots. Especially the ones that wear the mask under their noses. It's not a chin hammock. It's supposed to help protect them and us.”

Lena Simone said it was vital that people follow the rules and self-isolate if required.

She said: “This virus is so deadly that you have to stay at home for two weeks if you've got it.”
