Thank you for letting us all share your highs and lows - Editor's comment

Forgive me if this is a little bit selfish but I have taken immense joy from hearing your delighted stories of vaccines.

I have had phone calls, emails and letters telling me just how over the moon our more elderly readers are at having had the jab.

Those fortunate enough to have received that momentous dose have got a spring in their step, even though they are still restricted to dancing around their dinning room tables.

I am truly blessed to be able to have those conversations with scores of you and to share in your happiness. There is an excitement that accompanies these vaccine messages and it is unmistakable. I hope The Star has captured a little bit of that pleasure for you and that you keep on banging the vaccine drum to reassure others but also to drown out even the noisiest covidiots. We’re smiling even though we can’t yet meet up and celebrate with tea and cake. But, and it is a big but, The Star isn't letting up our pressure, alongside our sister newspapers across the country, to say the system needs to be better and local suggestions can not be ignored. We need all pharmacies and all GP surgeries to be included in this Herculian effort and it is not acceptable for anybody to have to travel more than a few minutes walk for their jab. Let me be clear, forcing people to go miles on public transport is unacceptable, unnecessary and wrong. If you were expecting to have heard more quickly about your vaccine because you are elderly or vulnerable, firstly please make sure your surgery has your correct phone number as much of the communication is being done by text and not necessarily within office hours. Secondly, let me remind you of the message that I am being asked by you, our readers, to share loudly and clearly. The days are incredibly difficult but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

If we stay strong, stay home and do our bit, it makes it much easier for the wonderful Sheffield teams who are trying so hard and achieving so much. Go on, make me smile and tell me your vaccine story. We all need a lift and the more of your messages of thanks we can get onto our letters pages the better. It doesn’t need to be very long or overly detailed, I know how grateful so many of you feel right now and I share your jubilation.

In these confusing and worrying times, local journalism is more vital than ever. Thanks to everyone who helps us ask the questions that matter by taking out a digital subscription or buying a paper. We stand together. Nancy Fielder, editor.
