Last week the Transport Secretary announced the government’s plans for allowing overseas travel. This is based on a ‘traffic light’ system that will be used to kickstart foreign travel. We asked our readers how they felt about the announcement. This is what they had to say.

Hayley Ross said that it’s; “Better than nothing. Just remember they maybe on our green list but we might not be on theirs.”

Paul Margerrison points out that; “Prices [have] doubled for Portugal already, but don’t forget it can get put on red list at any time when they find another variant. Don’t forget, when offered to have your vaccine so we can get back to normal” — yes, when possible do go out and have your vaccine jab.

But Helen-mae Ellis isn’t too chuffed with the current selection, saying; “Terrible choices there should be alot more countries on the green list. Not happy get Cyprus, Spain and Greece on green!!” Helen Suter replied, saying; “Cyprus are back into a national lockdown.. so probably wouldn't make a great destination.”

Beverley Langton says that; “I think we should forget holidays this year How did the virus get here in the first place?. Stay safe folks we've come too far to go back” — exercising caution, can’t fault that… but many will. Like Barbara Foster, who is; “Disappointed that Greek islands were not split into safe areas. I hoped to go to Kos which is safe but it's amber. Lumped with the rest of Greece. Not going til July so there is time yet.”

However, Yvonne Davies is (understandably) not particularly happy by this news, saying; “I personally think the travel ban has been lifted too early. Reason, the virus is rampant in quite a few country’s, We have enough cases here in the UK. Traveling in confined transport will increase transmission, and it spreads faster than any wildfire. I don’t want this country to go into another lockdown, I want to see my children, and also visit my elderly in-laws, who live in Wales, and if we go into lockdown again this will be impossible. My views, I an certainly not going abroad this year.”

Steve Williams doesn’t agree with the focus on holidays while the virus is still so prevalent, saying; “Too many people with their own selfish plans, they don't care about the virus as long as they get their holiday.”

Tracey Sutton noticing the inclusion of one popular destination pointed out that; “Portugal will be heaving!” And, Darren Stephenson was keen to point out that; “The Falkland Islands doesn't really fulfill the dream of holidaying on sun kissed beaches” — fair enough mate, who doesn’t want to see the penguins having a lark? Sarcasm aside, can’t really disagree.

Tony Flint is a little concerned that there may be a risk of some fibbing going on from some destinations; “Trouble is can we believe some of the countries figures they’re desperate for tourists and will lie about the true extent of the virus, like Turkey did last year. [The] last thing we need is another lockdown.”

Pete Atkin keeps it pretty short and sweet, he said “If their corona levels aren't at least as low as ours, don't go simple.” And, Claire Mallinson says that; “I’m just happy to be able to go somewhere in UK at the moment.”

Paul Metcalf maintains his regular form of comment when he said; “it's a pile of crap innit?” No comment, Paul.
