So important that badger sett locations remain secret

HOW nice to hear from someone (FW Adams) who appreciates British wild life. Not everyone shares this refreshing attitude, but fortunately there are still some of us about.

I am however, just a little worried that Star readers might respond with letters which publicise the location of badger setts in the Sheffield area.

There are still people around who are willing to risk the 6000 fine and 6 months in jail for the pleasure of digging these harmless creatures from their homes in order to beat them to death with spades or set dogs on them.

The best place for badger information is with South Yorkshire Badger Group. We keep records on sett locations, sightings, road kills etc. as well as protecting setts and dealing with orphans and casualties. We use our records where possible to protect badgers.

Anyone with an interest in badgers, (and FW Adams in particular) should contact South Yorkshire Badger Group on the 24 hour help line, 07722590184 or reach us at sybg.co.uk.

Having just read the letter in the Star I thought I would share what passes through my garden most evenings. We have two adult badgers, three young badger one adult fox and one young fox and a family of hedgehogs. We also have the occasional visit from an owl, which perches on the bird feeder and lots of frogs and toads.

We do encourage the visits and have placed food out each evening for years. We feel extremely privileged that we get such an opportunity to observe these visitors at such close quarters.
