Smoking ban takes no account of our weather!

When the government enacted their bill (conceived in Brussels and gold plated in Whitehall) on smoking in public places, to come into effect on July 1, they must have had visions of us smokers sitting under parasols sipping our glass of Chardonnay or whatever.

Alas, they failed to take account of the vagaries of the English weather.

The net result is a very few hardy souls sitting under a shelter - provided at great expense by the licensee - clutching their pints and cursing the Government for putting them in that position.

But where are the missing regulars?

Deprived of social intercourse, they are sitting at home, clutching a can of supermarket beer, watching mind-numbingly boring daytime television thereby advancing the onset of Alzheimer’s by a few years.

It is said that the idea of discouraging smoking is to enable us all to live longer - a strange idea when the Government cannot cope with the requirements of the existing ageing population!
