We asked our readers if they thought this would be the right thing to do and if it would help to lower the number of coronavirus cases in our city.

This is what some readers had to say.

Steve Goffin said he felt the small gain from potentially shutting down such venues would not be worth the detrimental impact on the venues themselves.

“It would help a very very small percentage but these places have taken full brunt of situation again.”

Nigel Hodkin said any new lockdown measures would be bad for hospitality venues and also bad for people.

“No. No lockdown will help get rid of the virus. It just kicks it further down the road. A lockdown will only impact people's health negatively in other ways.”

Eugene Solomon said the impact of closures would be catastrophic for some without support from the government to help them through.

"This time there won't be any furlough payments to staff - so many that close are unlikely to re-open.”

Abbey Copsey said closing these places would have a negative impact on the economy.

"No, why make the country worse off?”

Terri Leigh Johnson said not only did she not think it was a good idea, and also that other measures need to be lifted.

“No, lift the 10pm curfew to stop people going back to others houses and continuing the party.”

Donna Wainwright said she thought that closing pubs and restaurants would be unfair, as evidenced by the science.

"No, the pubs and restaurants opened on 4th July, they are the strictest places to go. There was no reported spike in cases. Schools and universities open in September then look.”

Mel Chalker said she thought it would a good idea, but also that such measures would not be going far enough.

She said: “I think it's a good idea. But should also close schools, colleges and universities.”

Lorraine Larkings and Candice Marie Wright also agreed with Mel’s point of view.

Lyndsey Bennett said she thought it was time for us all to accept living with the virus, apart from the vulnerable.

"No, it affects so many businesses and livelihoods. If they shut pubs again a lot will not survive. I don’t agree with closing schools more strongly. If people are vulnerable or old protect them but let the rest carry on.”

Maria Hill also said: “The main areas of spreading is schools, colleges and universities so why victimise the hospitality industries?”

Rich Ward also said he agreed with the closure of pubs and restaurants, but also said he thought more needed to be done.”

"Yes, but not just these measures. We need to do everything possible to reduce community spread and to keep schools open for younger children.”

Patricia Pettican had a very strong view on the subject.

She said: “Yes, I don’t want to live this life. It has as to be done.”

Steven Holley said he thought some placed had re-opened far too soon.

“The virus won't go away so lockdown won't work and schools shouldn't have opened until they is a vaccine out.”
