Roads a disgrace

IT'S a long way from Bristol to Sheffield - at least, if you go via mid Wales, Preston and Callander in Scotland.

That was the route I took last week, joining three other friends on a motorcycle tour before calling in on my Mother in Oughtibridge. I promised the rest of the group some good biking roads over the moors, coming in over Midhopestones and Wigtwizzle. Roads that I cut my motorcycling teeth on over 30 years ago!

As soon as we turned off the A616 I knew I had made a mistake. We rode on roads in a dreadful state of repair; roads which were bad enough to put us in danger. Having grown up in Wortley District I was annoyed to think that Sheffield was taking taxes from the rural areas and spending them (as I thought) on urban Sheffield.

I was even more surprised to discover that the roads round Hillsborough were just as bad. What Sheffield's motorcycle accident rate is I dread to think.

Sheffield must now be a candidate for the overall worst roads in the country.
