Pub ban spoiled a great day's racing

I WOULD like to say a huge thank you to the people of Sheffield who turned out on Sunday to support the Great Yorkshire Run.

I am from Bradford and this was the first 10k run I have taken part in. It was fantastic to be running in my home county of Yorkshire.

The support on the streets was fantastic with people out all along the route. I was one of the slower runners at the back and was amazed that people stayed out to cheer us on long after the elite runners had finished.

There was however one disappointing incident which I feel obliged to tell your readers about.

After completing the run, myself, my partner and a couple of our friends went into a pub close to the finishing line, hoping for a drink and a rest.

The pub was called The Fountain. We approached the bar and waited to be served, only to be told that we were not welcome as sports wear was not allowed.

I can understand certain places having such rules, but this was a Sunday morning when there were 5,000 runners in the city, the pub was empty. I am not sure how three people wearing charity running vests, shorts and trainers could be offensive.

It took a lot of effort for me to train for the run, raise sponsorship and turn up and take part. To encounter this sort of attitude afterwards was astounding.

Apart from this incident we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and will be returning to Sheffield for the Great Yorkshire Run 2008.
