'Psychopath' jibe

I WAS deeply offended by David Blunkett's reported remarks in 'The Star' ('Pig Killer Needs Help', Thursday, September 6).

There is nothing to support his assertion that the killer of the piglets ‘is clearly a psychopath’, nor is there the slightest reason to suggest that the killer’s actions were motivated by untreated ‘madness’.

Violence and cruelty are not symptoms of mental health problems and to suggest that they are does a grave disservice to people who experience mental distress. It is ironic to consider David Blunkett’s ill conceived comments in the light of the recent announcement by Ivan Lewis, the Care Services Minister, highlighting the government’s backing for ‘a sustained national campaign against the stigma and ignorance which has blighted the lives of too many people with mental health problems for too long’.
