'Why have we not been consulted over Sheffield traffic ban?'

A reader questions why Sheffield residents were not consulted more over controversial road closures in the city.

I found the article by David Walsh interesting in the Star on Saturday. It was headed "Traffic ban saga needs sorting".

I absolutely agree with him.Strange that the people of Sheffield have had no input regarding the closing of the bus route along Leopold street and down Pinstone street.

My wife and I were in town last week to sort some finances. We parked down the back of the moor and walked up towards the peace gardens.

We both commented on how the road had been blocked off for the traffic and how the surface of the road had been raised to match the level of the footpath.Strange to think this road closure is/was a temporary measure created by our council in June.

You now need to walk to Arundel gate or up to West street to catch your buses now. Coun Ian Auckland (shadow member for transport) is quoted as saying that issues had still not been addressed within the £6m plans for breathing spaces as part of the £480m heart of the city development…

It would appear that part of the councils plans are to extend the peace gardens between the town hall and the new Radisson Blu Hotel..

A few things come to my mind here, 1.how will the Radisson's customers get to the hotel with their luggage assuming Pinstone street traffic will no longer exist for buses or I pressume taxis, 2.Is the Radisson chipping in with the costs of the extension or is that down to the rate payers of this city.

I also wonder how our elderly and physically challenged members of our society will fare when the trip into town becomes so uninviting. What about our families with young children and pushchairs or even ambulances cope when the roads are closed.

This is the same council that decided it was a good idea to spend hundreds of thousands of pounds to create a "temporary cycle route into town along shalesmoor ,again without consultation of the tax payers or take down magnificent trees(the lungs of our city) again at a substantial cost.

The list goes on, no wonder the town is quickly becoming a ghost town.
